Three Ways to Raise a Ten-Year-Old

What children actually study in Thailand, the United States, and a Waldorf school — and what each system’s exit exam quietly reveals about what it thinks school is for.

Somewhere in Bangkok right now, a ten-year-old is sitting in a ป.5 classroom. Somewhere in Ohio, one is in fifth grade. Somewhere in a Waldorf school, one is in Class 5. Same age, same school week, three genuinely different answers to the question of what a child that age should be doing with their day.

I got curious about this the way most people probably do — sideways. I’d been reading about Rudolf Steiner’s odd claim that a human being is essentially an upside-down plant, and it turned out that idea wasn’t a throwaway metaphor. It determines what a Waldorf ten-year-old studies. That sent me down a much longer road: if one school of thought puts botany at age ten for reasons rooted in a spiritual philosophy, what are the other systems doing at that age, and why?

Who Steiner Was, and What Waldorf Actually Is

The first Waldorf school opened in Stuttgart in 1919, for the children of workers at the Waldorf-Astoria cigarette factory. Rudolf Steiner — Austrian, a Goethe scholar before he was an educator — designed it around anthroposophy, his own spiritual philosophy. It grew into one of the largest independent school movements in the world, with well over a thousand schools and nearly two thousand kindergartens across more than seventy countries.

In practice, a Waldorf school is recognisable by a handful of things: formal reading is delayed, often until age seven or eight; the morning begins with a “main lesson” block, one subject taught intensively for three or four weeks before moving to the next; one class teacher stays with the same group of children for years rather than handing them off annually; the arts are woven through everything; and standardised testing is largely absent.

The part that’s easy to skip past, and shouldn’t be, is the foundation. Steiner taught that the human being is a plant inverted — the head corresponding to the root, the metabolic and reproductive region to the flower, the rhythmic system of heart and lungs to the stem and leaves in between. This is not a colourful aside. It is why plants get studied when they do, why certain remedies map to certain organs in anthroposophic medicine, and why the curriculum is sequenced the way it is. Whatever you make of it, it is a belief system, not a research finding — and I’ll come back to that.

Thailand has a small Waldorf presence: a handful of schools, with Panyotai in Bangkok — founded in 1996 — generally described as the country’s first, alongside initiatives in Chiang Mai and Khon Kaen. So this isn’t a purely theoretical comparison. It’s just a very small one.

Is This Even Apples-to-Apples?

Not quite, and it’s worth being upfront about why.

Thailand and the United States are national school systems. Waldorf is a pedagogy. That asymmetry matters more than it first appears.

Thailand runs a centralised Basic Education Core Curriculum, in force since 2008, built on eight learning areas: Thai language, mathematics, science, social studies with religion and culture, health and physical education, art, occupations and technology, and foreign languages. It applies nationwide. Alongside the academic standards sit five key competencies and eight desirable characteristics — including honesty, self-discipline, and the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy — which are assessed rather than merely aspired to.

The United States has no national curriculum at all. Education is decided at state and district level. The Common Core State Standards, introduced in 2010, are the closest thing to a shared national benchmark, and they cover only English language arts and mathematics. Even that is contested: Texas law explicitly bars the State Board of Education from adopting Common Core, and bars districts from being required to teach it. When people say “the American curriculum,” they are describing an average, not a document.

Waldorf is neither. It’s a philosophy implemented school by school, worldwide, adapted to whatever local requirements apply. There is no ministry enforcing it and no legal grade structure behind it — just a shared developmental sequence that Waldorf schools broadly follow.

So the ages line up cleanly. The purposes don’t. Keep that in view for everything below.

That last row is the one worth sitting with. Waldorf places botany at ten to eleven not because of subject logic but because of a claim about the child: animals are taught by comparing each creature’s form to the human form, and plants arrive a year later mapped onto the threefold human being. It is the inverted-plant idea, cashed out as a lesson plan.

The US and Thai sequences ask what has to come before what. The Waldorf sequence asks who the child is at nine, at ten, at eleven. That is a much larger difference than a difference in syllabus.

Where I’d Push Back

Three places, one for each system.

On Waldorf: the exam-free model is elegant until it meets a university admissions system that runs entirely on scores. A Thai student who has spent twelve years without standardised testing still has to produce TGAT and TPAT results to enter most Thai universities. Freedom from testing is real, but it is purchased somewhere, and usually the purchase happens at eighteen.

Also on Waldorf, and more seriously: the developmental sequencing is genuinely elegant, and it is stated with far more confidence than its evidence base supports. The academic criticism of Waldorf is aimed less at the classroom practice — which is generally well regarded — than at anthroposophy underneath it. Sven Ove Hansson argued as early as 1991 that anthroposophy’s claim to a scientific footing fails because its ideas are neither empirically derived nor replicable; Carlo Willmann later noted that it offers no route to falsification outside its own spiritual methods. The German education scholar Heiner Ullrich’s summary has been quoted so often it has become the standard verdict: impressive practice, dubious theory. That is a fair thing to hold in mind while also finding the botany sequence beautiful. Both can be true.

In Thailand: the rigidity gets criticised constantly, and the criticism is often deserved, a fifteen-year-old picking a stream is making a decision with a longer shadow than most fifteen-year-olds can see. But the same centralisation means a child in a rural province and a child in Bangkok are held to the same eight learning areas and the same national standards. American decentralisation has no equivalent floor. Whether that floor is set high enough is a separate argument; that it exists is not nothing.

On the United States: the flexibility that reads as freedom also means “what American children learn” is not really answerable. Two students the same age in different states may share almost no curriculum, and the one national standard that was meant to fix that is legally excluded in at least one large state. It is worth being suspicious of any confident sentence — including some of mine above — that begins “in the US, students study…”

What the Exit Exam Knows

Go back to the three ten-year-olds. Follow each one to eighteen. The gate at the end of the road says more than any syllabus does.

The SAT: a rank, on a profile you assembled yourself. School as a portfolio.

O-NET, then TGAT and TPAT: a rank against every other eighteen-year-old in the country, on the same eight learning areas you met at six. School as a common floor, held nationally.

The capstone: one idea, carried to a finished thing, defended out loud. School as a person, ready or not.

Three gates. Three questions. None of them is really a question about the subject.

Which is why the ten-year-olds look the way they do. Decimals in Ohio — build the portfolio, one skill at a time. The eight learning areas in Bangkok — hold the floor, the same for everyone. The plant kingdom in Class 5 — meet the child where the child is.

Same age. Same school week. Three different beliefs about what a ten-year-old is for.

One important caveat before reading this. The year rows below show what is newly introduced or newly emphasised at that age — not the child’s whole timetable. Every system teaches its full core subject list every single year; the first row shows what runs continuously underneath everything else. Entries are indicative, and especially loose for the US, where the answer varies by state and district.
